👜 Fashion Tip of the Week

fashion

Try Nuuly! It’s my favorite new thing. I’ve been renting clothes from here for the last 3 months, and I can’t think of a better way to wear new/used clothes. As far as clothing rentals go, I tried Stitch Fix many years ago and didn’t like the style selection much back then. And, in Berlin, I ordered most of my clothes through Zalando, which was wonderful, because they had tons of great European brands, and you only paid for the items you kept. But, it wasn’t renting exactly, since you couldn’t wear the other clothes you returned. More recently, I was buying most of my clothes from Nordstrom’s or vintage shops.

The beauty of Nuuly is that you get to pick out 6-8 items each month to “borrow.” You can wear them as often as you like, and at the end of the month, you send everything back, unless of course, there’s something you really want to keep. In which case, you can buy any of the items at a steep discount. I’ve bought one amazing full-length Sherpa coat so far. Some of the clothes I’ve rented still have tags on them, meaning they haven’t been worn before. Others were slightly used and previously rented out. The selection is fantastic, and you can save all the items you like in your virtual closet, until it’s time for your next box.

Nuuly is run by Free People and Anthropologie, so they have a ton of selection from those brands, which were two of my favorite brands already anyhow. But, they also have many others, everything from small boutiques and designers to more well-known ones. Hutch is a new one I discovered recently that l love. The clothes range from super casual, to holiday dress to winter jumpsuits to summer vacation to office wear. They literally have everything! In general, it seems like the selection is a lot less formal than other rental sites, like Rent the Runway.

Anyway, I highly recommend it! You get fun, new clothes every month, and just when you’re tired of them, it’s time for your next box. Also, it’s great if you want to get something for a special occasion — like a birthday or a special night out or a wedding – but don’t want to splurge on a new dress or a nice outfit. It also worked really well over the holidays. I got cozy sweater dresses for Thanksgiving and Christmas and a super fun disco jumpsuit for New Year’s!

Feel free to use my friend referral code if you want (to get $10 OFF your first month). I promise, you won’t regret it. Plus – they do all the laundry! Can’t beat that.

🎬 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery 🤩🤩

film

I have to admit, I didn’t like the first Knives Out film, and I liked this second one even less. Even good performances by Edward Norton and Janelle Monae couldn’t save it for me. Without giving anything away, I figured out the “murder mystery” within the first 30 minutes and spent the rest of the film thinking it was rather dull. Also, Daniel Craig’s accent as Detective Benoit drove me crazy, but I’m very particular about accents. That being said, I’m in the minority here. Daniel Craig was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance and the general consensus is that people love this movie. It’s not that I’m against whodunits in general (I used to read detective novels as a kid), but this series hasn’t managed to capture my interest, despite the star-studded cast. Let’s just say, I’m way more excited for Ocean’s 14 to come out. But, what do I know? Go check it out yourself!

🎬 Emily the Criminal 🤩🤩🤩🤩

film

I loved this movie! Granted, Aubrey Plaza is a national treasure, by which I mean a complete babe and total badass. So, I might be a little biased. But, her co-star Theo Rossi is also fantastic. I wanted to see this film in theaters, but ended up catching it at home. Emily is saddled with student debt and unable to live off her job as a delivery driver, when she gets a tip from a co-worker that leads her to commit credit card fraud. This film is an interesting look into the brutal world of crime, where loyalty means everything, and one step down the wrong path might just lead you down another. It begs the question — can we recover from our past mistakes, or are we doomed to repeat them forever? Watch it!

🎬 Pinocchio 🤩🤩🤩✨

film

I don’t remember much about the original story of Pinocchio, except that he’s a wooden puppet whose nose grows when he lies, and that he wants to be a real boy. Guillermo del Toro certainly took his liberties in telling this version, unless the evil circus director or Mussolini or an ethereal sphinx appear in the original story. In any case, it’s beautifully-made. Ewan McGregor is hilarious as Jimmy Cricket and Pinocchio is a sweet boy with a golden voice. The film is a musical and the songs are made for children. Guillermo del Toro, whose films are always magical, but often possess a dark side, is endlessly surprising. More inventive and creative than any other version of this story could hope to be. Excellent stop-motion.

📺 Emily in Paris (S3) 🤩🤩 ✨

tv

I don’t know why this show is so damn watchable. I’ve binged every season, and yet, I don’t find myself liking any of the characters, except for Luc. Emily is annoying. Gabriel is cute, but boring. Mindy can sing, but that’s about all. Cami is chic and French in all the right ways, but I found myself rooting for her less this season. Maybe, it’s the fashion. Maybe, it’s the fact that the show is set in Paris. Maybe, it’s the fact that Emily’s French office mates Sylvie, Julien and Luc are at times delightfully rude and hilarious. Maybe, it’s all of the above. I guess this show is kind of like chewing bubble gum. Once you start, you just can’t stop. Also, the Pop Air Balloon Museum is my literal dream come true. So, if you’re in the mood for something mindless and fun, Emily in Paris is the perfect weekend binge. But, if you want something a bit more challenging, watch The English instead.

📺 Fleishman is in Trouble 🤩🤩🤩🤩

tv

Based on the novel by the same name, Fleishman is in Trouble is a story about nothing short of “everything.” So, what does that mean? According to the narrator, everything stands for life, love, family, career, marriage, money, divorce, friendship, but most importantly — the terrible disappointment of it all. The story centers around three Jewish friends who meet in college, go on a trip to Israel where a questionable woman foretells their future, and then part ways and pursue upper-middle class lives in New York City. Their friendship picks back up when Toby (aka Doctor Fleishman) reaches out during a personal crisis. His life is thrown into upheaval after Rachel (his wife) disappears, effectively leaving him to raise their two children alone. And, though the series focuses on the drama of Toby and Rachel’s divorce, it’s told from his friend Libby’s point of view, who grappling with her own mid-life crisis, has recently picked up smoking again and dreams of her old NYC life.

As someone who is nearing the ripe old age of 40 — and has friends with kids, friends without kids, friends who want kids but can’t have them, friends who are happily married, friends who are unhappily married, friends who are single and happy, friends who are unmarried and unhappy, friends who are divorced, friends who want a divorce and friends who are already remarried — it all feels very relatable. In short, Fleishman is in Trouble is about the never-ending process of having to reconcile your past dreams and hopes with your current life and potential future, none of which ever seem to bear any resemblance to one another.

🎬 Amsterdam 🤩🤩✨

film

This star-studded comedy is based on a real-life murder plot and the three friends — a doctor, a nurse, and a lawyer — who get caught up in the middle. It’s after World War I, Mussolini is gaining more power in Europe, and Christian Bale’s character, equipped with a glass eye and a broken back, works as a plastic surgeon, sowing wounded veterans back together. But, amid all the madness and misery, Amsterdam attempts to capture the joys of life — that precious time when the world still seems good and beautiful and true. Similar to JoJo Rabbit or The Producers, this film takes a lighthearted, humorous approach to an otherwise gloomy affair (read: war). Though I’d argue, the first two do it better.

🎬 Empire of Light🤩🤩🤩✨

film

Empire of Light is a quiet, thoughtful Sam Mendes film about a mentally disturbed woman who works at a seaside cinema in 1980s England. Beautifully shot, this film is an ode to the magic of movies and the friendships and communities that shape our lives. But, it doesn’t shy away from more serious themes like loneliness, mental illness and racism. The heart of the film rests on Hilary’s (Olivia Coleman) relationship to Stephen (Micheal Ward), a new theater employee. Empire of Light teaches us what it means to grow up, experience life, and — despite all its troubles — to look ahead to the future with hope. A perfect film to bring in the new year.
