I don’t remember much about the original story of Pinocchio, except that he’s a wooden puppet whose nose grows when he lies, and that he wants to be a real boy. Guillermo del Toro certainly took his liberties in telling this version, unless the evil circus director or Mussolini or an ethereal sphinx appear in the original story. In any case, it’s beautifully-made. Ewan McGregor is hilarious as Jimmy Cricket and Pinocchio is a sweet boy with a golden voice. The film is a musical and the songs are made for children. Guillermo del Toro, whose films are always magical, but often possess a dark side, is endlessly surprising. More inventive and creative than any other version of this story could hope to be. Excellent stop-motion.
